Hi, I’m Melanie from Cupcake Magic Treats…
My passion for baking and creating started when I was in primary school, I used to help my mom decorate our birthday cakes (I come from a family of 5 girls – so lots of birthday cakes!!)
I took home economics as a subject in school and studied The Art of
Entertaining/Baking at the Boland College, Stellenbosch.
I started out by doing themed cupcakes & party packs while working as a PA. Later, when my son was 5, I gave up my job as my hubby took a job being a Skipper on a tuna deck boat which meant he was away from home for many weeks at a time. Then 7 years ago my husband passed away, he had had a massive heart attack in his sleep, he was only 39 years old. My world fell apart… I had just celebrated my 40th birthday a week before he passed away, I had no job and my son was 11 years old, we lived in Yzerfontein.
A month after my husband’s passing, reality kicked in and I decided to move to Durbanville to be closer to my family, that's when I had to find a job to pay for rent; schooling, etc.
So I started again with cupcakes for family and friends…and then the requests for birthday cakes started! I’ve had no training but thanks to YouTube, I was able to cover a cake in fondant and so my creations just got better and better!
I’ve been baking for 7 years now and I am proud to say we made it, my son is in Matric and we have so much to be thankful for…
Baking for a living to pay the bills and survive financially is hard work with long hours and a bit of stress but I have realized that this is my therapy. It makes me happy to create something with basic ingredients and the cherry on top is seeing the excitement and face of a happy customer.
A blessing I am thankful for this women’s month, is how Nicolette from Fish4Africa has recognized my small business. The work and exposure she has given me has been phenomenal.
This month is all about appreciating the amazing women in our lives, and women in business is so important in today’s climate. Cupcake Magic Treats would like to thank Fish4Africa for helping small businesses. Hopefully our small business can help another small business one day!
Well done Fish4Africa for your amazing small business initiative and CSI – women inspiring women!
